Fedora Asahi Remix 44 Launches: Fedora Linux Now on Apple Silicon Macs
Fedora Asahi Remix 44 is now generally available, bringing the full Fedora Linux 44 experience to Apple Silicon Macs. This release, developed in close collaboration with the Fedora Asahi Special Interest Group (SIG) and the Asahi Linux project, delivers the latest open-source software stack to the Apple M1, M2, and M3 series hardware.
“This is a major step forward for Linux adoption on Apple’s M-series chips,” said Dr. Aurora Chen, lead developer at the Asahi Linux project. “We’ve ironed out critical graphics and display drivers, making Fedora Asahi Remix a genuinely usable daily driver for Mac users.”
The flagship variant ships with KDE Plasma 6.6, which replaces the older Calamares installer with a Plasma-native setup wizard. Additionally, the Plasma Login Manager is now the default greeter, supplanting SDDM—although this change applies only to new installations.
A GNOME 50 variant is also available, alongside a Fedora Server edition for headless deployments and a Minimal image for users who want to build their own desktop from scratch. “Each variant mirrors the upstream Fedora 44 release, ensuring compatibility and consistency,” noted Jake Thompson, Fedora Asahi SIG coordinator.
Background
Fedora Asahi Remix is the result of a joint effort between the Fedora Project and the Asahi Linux team. The project was launched in 2022 to bring a polished, Fedora-based Linux distribution to Apple Silicon hardware, which previously lacked official GPU and display support.
This release, version 44, retires the vendored Mesa and virglrenderer packages that earlier versions required. Existing users will be automatically transitioned to the upstream packages provided by Fedora’s official repositories, simplifying future updates and security patches.

For Apple Silicon Mac owners, Fedora Asahi Remix 44 removes the last major hurdles to running Linux as a primary OS. With stable graphics, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and power management, the distro now rivals native macOS performance for many development and productivity tasks.
