Red Hat today announced major updates to its Red Hat AI (RHAI) platform at its Summit in Atlanta, introducing what it calls 'metal-to-agent' capabilities designed to move artificial intelligence from experimental labs into production environments.

The centerpiece is RHAI 3.4, which for the first time includes comprehensive AgentOps—tools for tracing, observability, evaluation, and lifecycle management of AI agents. The release also emphasizes Model-as-a-Service (MaaS) to provide a governed interface for developers and administrators.

Four Pillars of Red Hat's AI Strategy

According to Joe Fernandes, Red Hat's Vice President of AI, the company's strategy rests on four key pillars. 'First, helping customers deliver fast, flexible, and efficient inference, serving models in their environment,' he said. 'Second, connecting their enterprise data to those models and agents.'

'Third, helping them accelerate the deployment and management of agents across a hybrid cloud environment,' Fernandes continued. 'And fourth, bringing that all together on our integrated AI platform, enabling them to run any model in any agent, across any hardware and cloud environment.'

That fourth pillar—unified orchestration—is a new and critical component of Red Hat's AI roadmap.

Model-as-a-Service and Inference Improvements

RHAI 3.4 introduces Model-as-a-Service, allowing pre-trained models to be delivered as shared resources accessible via API endpoints. This gives developers a single governed interface to access curated models while letting IT administrators track usage and enforce policies.

The platform also builds on high-performance distributed inference using vLLM and the llm-d distributed inference engine. New request prioritization lets interactive and background traffic share the same endpoint, with latency-sensitive requests handled first under load.

Red Hat claims speculative decoding support improves response speeds by 2x–3x with minimal quality impact while lowering cost per interaction.

The Rise of AI Agents

'The agentic era represents an evolution of our platform from running traditional applications to powering intelligent, autonomous systems,' Fernandes said. He noted that agents will be the primary driver of inference demand, stating, 'What's really going to be driving inference demand exponentially is AI agents.'

To address these operational challenges, RHAI 3.4 introduces integrated tracing, observability, and evaluations, alongside agent identity and lifecycle management to move agents from experimental to production-grade.

Earlier versions of RHAI focused on model serving and basic inference. The announcement signals that Red Hat is betting heavily on agents as the next wave of enterprise AI, and that it sees operational management—not just model accuracy—as the key to production success.
