Disney announced today that Avatar: Fire and Ash will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ from June 27, marking the end of its theatrical window. The sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water has grossed over $2.3 billion globally since its release last December.

Previous Avatar films debuted on Disney+ roughly six months after theaters. This 5½-month gap for Fire and Ash is slightly shorter, signaling a shift in Disney’s windowing approach as streaming competition intensifies.
The first Avatar (2009) and The Way of Water (2022) are already available on the platform, making Fire and Ash the final piece of the trilogy for now.
What This Means for Subscribers and Disney
For Disney+, the addition is a strategic coup. The service added 8 million subscribers last quarter, but growth has slowed. A blockbuster exclusive like Fire and Ash could spark a surge.

Fans who missed the 3D theatrical experience will still get immersive sound options and potential 4K HDR streaming, though Disney has not confirmed technical specs. The film runs 3 hours 12 minutes.

Cameron has already shot parts of Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. Disney+ will likely become the home for all future Avatar content, including potential series. “This isn’t just a movie drop — it’s the start of a long-term ecosystem,” Mitchell added.
Disney+ will also offer behind-the-scenes featurettes, and a documentary about the film’s underwater filming technology is expected later this year.
